CBD for migraines and headaches

What is a migraine?

Migraine is otherwise known as a primary headache. It is a stand-alone condition and does not occur as a separate symptom of another condition. It is characterised by very severe headaches that recur from time to time. In addition, migraine is accompanied by other symptoms such as hypersensitivity to light, sounds, nausea or vomiting. It is often preceded by a migraine aura, which is accompanied by speech problems, dizziness, numbness in the limbs and, in extreme cases, loss of consciousness. It is estimated that around 15% of the population suffers from migraine, with attacks lasting between 4 and 72 hours. The development of this disease entity is largely influenced by genetics, but also by environmental factors, especially stress or lack of sleep. Symptoms heralding a migraine attack include distortion of the visual field, darkness in front of the eyes, motor and sensory disturbances. Phases of a migraine attack:

  • Annunciation;
  • Aura;
  • Headaches;
  • Paroxysmal phase;

Headache treatment - what to treat with?

We can divide treatment into two groups: emergency treatment and preventive treatment. The former involves the use of analgesics such as paracetamol, anti-inflammatory drugs, ergotamines, acetylsalicylic acid. On the other hand, as prophylaxis, measures are used to prevent migraine attacks. These include antiepileptic drugs, cardiovascular drugs and antidepressants. The biggest problem associated with taking painkillers is the so-called drug-induced headaches or even drug addiction. With regard to prevention, it is emphasised how important diet, sleep and stress reduction are. This is when cbd oils can be an ideal solution. While migraine does not have one specific source, the most common known causes can be prevented. Factors that can contribute to the development of migraine:

  • Chronic and prolonged stress
  • Poor diet
  • Alcohol
  • Changes in the weather
  • High and frequent exhaustion
  • Strain on the body
  • Hormonal changes

Cbd oil and migraine

Since as early as the 19th century, cannabis has been used to treat headaches by preparing tinctures from the herb. Today, a different form of cbd-oil is recommended. Migraine is associated with a dysregulation of the enocabinoid system, which is responsible for pain, emotions and sleep. An enhancement of serotonin 5-HT1A receptors has been shown after the use of cbd hemp oil preparations. However, it is important to remember that CBD is not a migraine medication and can only be used as a supplement.

CBD oil - migraine and dosage?

Migraine is associated with increased stimulation of sensory nerves - which is a response to inflammatory factors released during an attack. As other pharmaceuticals can cause additional pain and other side effects. CBD oil may be the ideal replacement, the use of which does not come with the previously mentioned consequences. Properties of CBD to alleviate migraine symptoms:

  • Antiemetic properties (prevents nausea, vomiting);
  • Improved sleep quality;
  • Stress reduction;

Exposure to excessive stress can lead to mental health and ultimately trigger migraines. CBD relieves anxiety, symptoms of depression and anxiety by regenerating nerves and neurotransmitters. Cannabidiol also improves the quality of rest, helps with sleep, and supports deep and restful sleep. The action is also based on shifting sleep from the REM phase to the deeper NREM phase, which encourages the use of cbd oil. Migraine, the dosage of cannabis products is an individual issue. However, it is recommended to start with the lowest concentration. The lowest dose available is cbd oil 5%. Migraine and its symptoms can be effectively minimised by the effects of cannabis. Supplementation is free of side effects and completely safe. Importantly, the dose should be selected individually. The smallest dose (the so-called 'microdose') of CBD oil is recommended for:

  • Stress and anxiety;
  • Metabolic disorders;
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder;
  • Mood swings;
  • Nausea.
